‘AVENGERS’ TO ‘JUSTICE LEAGUE’: JOSS WHEDON FILLS IN FOR A GRIEVING ZACK SNYDER

Due to a tragic loss in the family, Director Zack Snyder has decided to step out as Director of the upcoming ‘Justice League’ film. Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Zack and his wife/producer Deborah lost their 20yr old daughter, Autumn, to suicide in March. Snyder wanted to continue working on the film, hoping that it would help ease the pain stating:

“In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was way through it,” Snyder told THR. “The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all-consuming. And in the last two months, I’ve come to the realization …I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”

Warner Bros. Had originally suggested pushing back the films release date out of respect to Snyder. But Zack insisted that wasn’t necessary.

Joss Whedon who has linked to directing the upcoming ‘Batgirl’ film for DCEU was given the reigns to finish the upcoming ‘Justice League.’ In a recent interview,  Warner Bros. Production President Toby Emmerich assured fans that Snyder’s work would not be altered:

“We’re not introducing any new characters. It’s the same characters in some new scenes. He’s handing a baton to Joss, but the course has really been set by Zack. I still believe that despite this tragedy, we’ll still end up with a great movie.”

Snyder’s colleagues in Hollywood have reached out to show their support:

Todd Phillips Says His ‘Joker’ Film Is Going To Make Fans Mad

“We constantly thought, ‘God, imagine if Joaquin actually does this.”

Director Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker’ film, starring Joaquin Phoenix, is finally starting to take shape… Or is it? Fans have been trying to piece together what we can expect from this live action origin story about the “Clown Prince of Gotham.” The trailer that dropped a couple months ago, gave us some insight as to the tone of the upcoming DC film. But, in a recent interview with Empire, Phillips told us that we can forget trying to find a comic comparison to his film:

“We didn’t follow anything from the comic books, which people are gonna be mad about. We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That’s what was interesting to me. We’re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It’s about this man.”

Phillips is already preparing for fan backlash due to the lack of continuity with the DC Comic Universe. The fortunate thing for the Director, is that there has never been a definitive back story for Gotham’s most feared villain. The closest story comes via a 1988 one shot comic titled, ‘Batman: The Killing Joke.’

The man who will become the Joker is an unnamed engineer who quits his job at a chemical company to become a stand-up comedian, only to fail miserably. Desperate to support his pregnant wife Jeannie, he agrees to guide two criminals through the chemical plant where he previously worked so that they can rob the playing card company next to it. During the planning, the police inform him that his wife has died in a household accident. Grief-stricken, the engineer tries to withdraw from the plan, but the criminals strong-arm him into keeping his commitment to them.

At the plant, the criminals make him don a special mask to become the infamous Red Hood. As previously told to the engineer by the criminals, they use this disguise to implicate any accomplice as the mastermind and to divert attention away from themselves. Once inside, they encounter security personnel, a shootout ensues, and the two criminals are killed. The engineer is confronted by Batman, who is investigating the disturbance.

Terrified, the engineer jumps into the chemical plant’s waste pound lock to escape Batman and is swept through a pipe leading to the outside. Once outside, he discovers to his horror that the chemicals have permanently bleached his skin chalk-white, stained his lips ruby-red and dyed his hair bright green. The engineer’s disfigurement, compounded with the loss of his family, drives him completely insane and marks the birth of the Joker. -Wikipedia

Based on the recent trailer, it appears Phillips will use the “Failed stand up comedian” approach, but not much after that. Only time will tell how Joker’ will turn out. But, one could only imagine, there must be a high level of confidence in this relatively low budget project, knowing how scrutinizing fans can be about their beloved comic characters. Phillips wrote this film with Joaquin Phoenix in mind from the start:

“I think he’s the greatest actor,” the director said. “We had a photo of him above our computer while we were writing. We constantly thought, ‘God, imagine if Joaquin actually does this.”
