Getting several stars together for an event-like film is hardly a new idea. Whether it’s the Academy Award-winning cast of ‘The Poseidon Adventure’ or Sylvester Stallone grabbing his pals for ‘The Expendables’ these kind of ensemble films are huge hits and it’s no different overseas. Movies such as ‘My Lucky Stars’ and ‘SPL: Sha Po Lang’ (released as ‘Kill Zone‘ in the United States) have been huge hits thanks to this tried and true strategy. But as big as those movie were the martial arts movie community may have their biggest film in ‘Gong Shou Dao’.

Jack Ma, chairman of the Alibaba Group, will not only finance but star in one of the biggest martial arts movies of all time. The entrepreneur will make his movie debut as a Tai Chi Master in ‘Gong Shou Dao’, which translates into “Martial Art” based on “Guard and Defense”. Rounding out the cast is a veritable “Who’s Who” of martial arts film legends including Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung, Tony Jaa, Wu Jing, Yuen Woo Ping and Jet Li (who is also be producing).

With such a star-studded cast ‘Gong Shou Dao’ is bound to bring in eyes from around the world. But according to producer Jet Li the short’s primary aim is to promote the benefits of Tai Chi and give a glimpse into Chinese culture.

“Through this film, we could pay tribute to our predecessors in the Chinese martial arts, pay tribute to Chinese culture, pay tribute to the world, and at the same time, share that Chinese culture.” says Li. While little is known about a US release there it is currently planned to come out in November on the Chinese online video platform YouKu.
