Director James Wan will be stepping outside his box once again to bring us Mortal Kombat. A project that has been in “Production hell” for quite some time. Deadline reports that Mortal Kombat will be released March 5, 2021 and will pit the video game film against Sony and Mattel’s, ‘Masters of the Universe.’ Also an animated Fox film, ‘Nimona.’

Official Deadline Release:

“The new Warner Bros. film based on the Mortal Kombat video games will be released on March 5, 2021. That sets up a head-to-head battle against Sony and Mattel Films’ Masters of the Universe along an untitled Universal Event Film and Fox’s animated fantasy Nimona.”

“Produced by Aquaman’s James Wan and directed by first-time filmmaker Simon McQuoid, the new fantasy-action Mortal Kombat is the third film inspired by the video game, following 1995’s Mortal Kombat and 1997’s Mortal Kombat Annihilation. The film just started production in South Australia, with no details on cast or storyline revealed.”

James Wan, most notably known for his work in modern day horror films, such as Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring, will once again step outside his typical genre as he did for 2018’s major blockbuster film, ‘Aquaman’ which has grossed more than  $1.1billion at the global box-office.

Mortal Kombat is a video game franchise originally developed by Midway Games’ Chicago studio in 1992. The development of the first game was originally based on an idea that Ed Boon and John Tobias had of making a video game starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, but as that idea fell through, a horror-fantasy themed fighting game titled Mortal Kombatwas created instead. The original game has spawned many sequels and spin-offs consisting of several action-adventure games, films (animated and live-action with its own sequel), and television series (animated and live-action), as well as a comic book series, a card game and a live-action tour. Along with Street Fighter and Tekken, Mortal Kombat has become one of the most successful fighting franchises in the history of video games and one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. -wikipedia
