Did The ‘Final Fantasy VII: Remake’ Live Up To The Hype?

Published

Final Fantasy VII: Remake [Square Enix]

First thing is first, and that will be this article is spoiler free. Final Fantasy is one of the most treasured and historic video game franchises to appear on any console. Although the newer entries to the series have been somewhat–lackluster or lacking that classic “lore” that hasn’t been recaptured for years now, we finally received what had been spoken of and hyped for years.

Final Fantasy VII is one of the most popular games in not just the franchises history, but gaming history. The game was originally released on the original playstation back in 1997 to critical acclaim and worldwide fanfare. A remake of the game had been teased for what seemed like ages, and finally in 2015, the dream of every Cloud Strife fan had come into fruition, as it was officially announced.

So fast forward to the year of 2020, and oh what a year it has been. At first the game had a release day of March 3rd, 2020. With fans literally in hysteria the long awaited release would hit another bump in the road. Square Enix would later announce the game would be pushed back a month with a new schedule release date of April 10th. With the ever growing Covid-19 scare, many fans were afraid it could even be pushed back longer.

The day of April 10th came, with the world shuddered in fear and isolation, there would finally be a piece of good news, the game was released. Many of the copies were bought digitally as buying within stores had become almost impossible due to the closing of stores worldwide. Yet this did not seem to matter for everyone who had lived through the eyes of Cloud Strife and Co. the time had finally arrived. In addition to the hype came along the sales of 3.5 million copies within the first three days alone.

So after diving into the game and completing it, did it truly live up to the hype?  The game’s graphics to say the least are beautiful, it truly shows the power the PS4 can truly possess. The story of course like the original was very well done, even if the game which can take you anywhere from 25-50 hours to complete, only contains about 10-15% of the entire story (yes, multiple parts will be released to complete the saga). With all of your favorite characters from the original with completely remodeled graphics and voice acting, what Square Enix was able to complete here was quite simply put, astonishing.

So here we are nearly three months into the release of this remade classic, it really took what everyone loved from Midgar and the original game and spiced it up. It is hard to imagine tinkering with such a treasure, but it worked really well here. Even if this game is broken into parts, every playstation owner should own this game in their collection, and for Microsoft fans, it will be coming to Xbox consoles in the near future. So after years of delays, push-backs, a scary virus and whatever when on during these years, was the journey back to Midgar worth it? Yes, it truly was.

Can The PS5 Top Its Predecessor?

Published

on

The Playstation 4 vs Xbox One console war was a landslide victory for Sony. With over 100-million units sold, the PS4 is now the fourth biggest selling console in gaming history. With that being said, 2020 is a landmark year for Sony. The much hyped Playstation 5 will launch during the holiday season. It seems now that Sony is only competing with itself.

Not to discredit Microsoft, they can still sell a decent number of next-gen units, and Nintendo always has a large following with it’s exceptional first-party developed games. However Sony is now in a class of it’s own. Numbers do not lie, and this is certainly the case when it comes to the playstation consoles.

With great expectations comes great responsibility. Sony has the responsibility now to push out a console that must top it’s predecessor, which will be no tiny feat. The PS4 was a monster of a system, with numerous AAA first-party games and even an updated version of the console that ran in 4K, it’s hard to imagine how this can be eclipsed. Although wherever there is a will, comes a way.

Sony has been mum on the PS5, we have seen screenshots of the new smaller design, we have even got a
look at the new controller, but in terms of games not much has been spoken of. We got a rather disappointing showing of the new Xbox console, but nothing from Sony, and it has us all in the dark and antsy. Could a big surprise be on the horizon? Or could they really just be playing their cards close? Especially considering regardless of the news they spill, most console gamers will be heading the way of Sony.

Sony has spoken of the new console being backwards compatible, but the question is, what will be the new titles? Will Naughty Dog unveil a new Uncharted character and game? Will Santa Monica unveil a new ‘God of War?’ Also what will Insomniac reveal as an encore to the hugely successful Spider-Man game? The possibilities are endless, and although the new consoles do not tend to “break the bank” so to speak on launch titles, it is exciting to discuss what Sony could unveil for the future.

So how can the PS5 top it’s predecessor? It seems gaming has hit an apex in terms of graphics and movement, some may have some gripes, but boy have we come along way in terms of the capabilities of what gaming can accomplish. Sony has said the PS5 will support 8k gaming, but to what extent will this be? Can they really top the games of this current gen? Only the future holds the key, but when you take a look at Sony’s formula of success, it would be wise not to bet against them.
