The Last of Us: Part II [Naughty Dog]

The year of 2020 is one for huge remembrance. Gaming wise it will be as well. ‘The Last of Us II’ release is right around the corner. The hype surrounding the game has been possibly plagued by issues outside of entertainment, but nonetheless developer Naughty Dog is right back this month to deliver the highly anticipated title.

Naughty Dog is no normal studio, not only are they known for the classic first edition of the title, but also they are responsible for the immensely popular series ‘Uncharted.’ The expectations for the newest entry are through the roof, and when it comes to this developer, they never seem to drop the ball.

The first ‘Last of Us’ game released in 2013, told an intriguing story of an alternative America. Survival was the name of the game in this title. America had been turned upside down as creatures once human, became cannibals infected by a strain of fungus. The third-person thriller came at the end of the PS3 cycle, which is exactly what this title is doing as the PS4 takes it’s swan song.

The story will look to continue the story of characters Joel and Ellie, who developed a father-daughter like relationship in the first title. From the trailers and videos it seems quite some time has passed, with Joel and Ellie looking much more mature in this new entry. Details have been far and few in-between, but we should expect to see much more of the same type of tense and dramatized moments.

If you were a fan of the first entry, this one surely should be on your list. Honestly if you own a PS4 it should be on everyone’s list. The type of action packed horror and thrilling moments will be there, in fact this is a Naughty Dog forte. June 19th can not come soon enough!

Are Sports Video Games Worth The Fuss?

Madden [EA Sports]

As a sports fan, I tend to always feel duped year after year. Whether it is NBA 2K, Fifa or Madden, I feel the same emptiness after every purchase.

Every year I am over the moon once a big sports game release is near. I always have this strange notion that a new iteration of a sports game for the year will do away with issues from old, and provide me with a brand new experience. Yet a week or two after the release, there it sits, the game back in it’s home and soon to collect dust on my gaming coffee table.

We have this imagination as sports fans, whether any of us admit it. We support our teams even through losing seasons and boneheaded moves by front office personnel. Within our minds or now with access to social media, we derive and construct these ideas of how we would run our favorite franchises, or how we would play, and that leads to this fascination with the games.

For every sports fan, we have somewhat of a dream of what it would be like to play within this level with these “sports icons” who we only see on television or view from a distance. Sports games give us this instant access to be within the leagues, the games or run our favorite franchise, or create ourselves to play within the games. This is a fantasy we try to realize every time we purchase these games, but the illusion is better than the actual project.

Fifa20 [EA Sports]

Sports game are a rehash of the game the year before, we are given some roster updates, maybe a few shiny new details like a wrinkle on a jersey, or maybe a couple of new additions, but let’s be honest, is it worth sixty-dollars and tax? I’d say NO. We are bamboozled year after year to purchase these rehashed games, which in turn is also our fault as consumers. Sure the product could be better, but greatness takes time, the best games take years to develop, but we are so hungry for our sports, we need it churned out every year.

So here we are, sitting here waiting on new copies of the sports games this year. Maybe the developers are money hungry souls, who consume our fandom year after year with re-done games, or maybe as sports fans we are impatient fools who demand our sports in any way or form we can get it. The jury is still out on who is really to blame here, but with that being said, who is excited for the new Madden this year?!

Did The ‘Final Fantasy VII: Remake’ Live Up To The Hype?

Published

Final Fantasy VII: Remake [Square Enix]

First thing is first, and that will be this article is spoiler free. Final Fantasy is one of the most treasured and historic video game franchises to appear on any console. Although the newer entries to the series have been somewhat–lackluster or lacking that classic “lore” that hasn’t been recaptured for years now, we finally received what had been spoken of and hyped for years.

Final Fantasy VII is one of the most popular games in not just the franchises history, but gaming history. The game was originally released on the original playstation back in 1997 to critical acclaim and worldwide fanfare. A remake of the game had been teased for what seemed like ages, and finally in 2015, the dream of every Cloud Strife fan had come into fruition, as it was officially announced.

So fast forward to the year of 2020, and oh what a year it has been. At first the game had a release day of March 3rd, 2020. With fans literally in hysteria the long awaited release would hit another bump in the road. Square Enix would later announce the game would be pushed back a month with a new schedule release date of April 10th. With the ever growing Covid-19 scare, many fans were afraid it could even be pushed back longer.

The day of April 10th came, with the world shuddered in fear and isolation, there would finally be a piece of good news, the game was released. Many of the copies were bought digitally as buying within stores had become almost impossible due to the closing of stores worldwide. Yet this did not seem to matter for everyone who had lived through the eyes of Cloud Strife and Co. the time had finally arrived. In addition to the hype came along the sales of 3.5 million copies within the first three days alone.

So after diving into the game and completing it, did it truly live up to the hype?  The game’s graphics to say the least are beautiful, it truly shows the power the PS4 can truly possess. The story of course like the original was very well done, even if the game which can take you anywhere from 25-50 hours to complete, only contains about 10-15% of the entire story (yes, multiple parts will be released to complete the saga). With all of your favorite characters from the original with completely remodeled graphics and voice acting, what Square Enix was able to complete here was quite simply put, astonishing.

So here we are nearly three months into the release of this remade classic, it really took what everyone loved from Midgar and the original game and spiced it up. It is hard to imagine tinkering with such a treasure, but it worked really well here. Even if this game is broken into parts, every playstation owner should own this game in their collection, and for Microsoft fans, it will be coming to Xbox consoles in the near future. So after years of delays, push-backs, a scary virus and whatever when on during these years, was the journey back to Midgar worth it? Yes, it truly was.
